The View’s Joy Behar Slams John Travolta for Wearing a Beret: ‘That Doesn’t Make You a Director’

John Travolta has an explanation for his new signature look — and The View‘s Sunny Hostin is on board, even if her cohost Joy Behar isn’t entirely convinced.

The Grease star has been turning heads at the Cannes Film Festival while promoting his directorial debut, Propeller One-Way Night Coach, sporting a close-cropped beard, thin-rimmed glasses and a rotation of slouchy berets. As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Travolta, 72, explained the fashion choice is because he’s playing a character.

“I’ve been around for over 50 years doing movies, but I can’t tell, when I look back, the difference between the events,” said Travolta, per the outlet. “I said, ‘I’m a director this time. You’re an actor, play the part of a director, look like an old-school director.'”

On the Tuesday, May 19 episode of The View, Hostin, 57, was visibly smitten by the new aesthetic. “I love it,” she said, per EW. “I’m swooning.”

The legal expert was especially taken with one particular beret. “The cream just threw it over the edge for me!” she exclaimed. “The cream matches with the tie! Sharp!”

Hostin’s cohost Behar wasn’t quite as swept up, however. Per EW, Behar, 83, quipped, “But, you know, that doesn’t make you a director just because you have a hat on your head.” Hostin shot back that Travolta is indeed a director — and reiterated, “He just looks good.”

Moderator Whoopi Goldberg closed out the segment with high praise for the actor. “John has always been a great dresser. He’s always had style,” Goldberg, 70, said. “He’s a wonderful dancer, and he’s actually a really great human being.”

Per the report, Travolta researched photos of classic filmmakers for inspiration and found they all wore “berets, and the glasses.” The discovery sealed the deal. “That’s what I’m doing. I’m doing an homage to being a director. So I’m going to play the part of being a director,” he said.

The approach serves a sentimental purpose too. When he looks back at this milestone down the road, “I’ll know — ‘Oh, that was Propeller One-Way Night Coach, that was Cannes, that’s when I won the Palme d’Or,’ and I’ll have a vividness of it,” he said, according to the article.
