Rob Reiner reportedly confided in longtime pal Michael Douglas as they both parented a son with substance abuse issues.
“With this terrible tragedy, we’re realizing how much pressure he was dealing with in his personal life with his son,” Michael, 81, shared during the Rob Reiner — Scenes from a Life special, which aired on CBS Sunday, December 21.
“I also had a son who had had drug issues. I’m happy to say he’s overcome them and living a prosperous life,” he added, referring to son Cameron Douglas, whom he shares with ex Diandra Luker.

According to Michael, he and Rob chatted “a lot” about their troubled children.
“We did talk a lot about that and what you can do as a parent, what you can’t do,” the Fatal Attraction star continued. “Knowing with all of that going on behind the scenes, this was a man who always gave it his best.”
Rob and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were brutally murdered in their Brentwood, California, home on December 14. The couple was found stabbed to death after reportedly getting into a heated argument with son Nick Reiner the previous night at ConanO’Brien’s holiday party.

Nick, 32, was taken into custody hours later and booked in the early morning hours of Monday, December 15. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and is being held without bail.
According to BBC, Nick’s lawyer, Alan Jackson, told reporters on December 17, “We ask that during this process, you allow the system to move forward in the way that it was designed to move forward. Not with a rush to judgement, not with jumping to conclusions, but with restraint and with dignity, and with the respect that this system and this process deserves, and that the family deserves.”
The A Few Good Men director was 78. His wife was 70.
