Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are defending themselves against the slew of claims about them in a scathing new book—including that Queen Camilla said her stepson was “brainwashed” by his wife.
An excerpt from Betrayal: Power, Deceit and the Fight for the Future of the Royal Family by Tom Bower published in The Times March 13 first details Prince William and Kate Middleton’s dislike of the former Suits star, 44, who married Harry, 41, in 2018. The book says William, 43, and Kate, 44, were concerned about how fast Harry and Meghan’s relationship moved. “Both evidently saw Meghan as a threat rather than an ally,” writes Bower.

“Meghan had become a divisive agent. To please her, Harry was ignoring his old friends. He even changed his telephone number without telling his family. The jovial lad about town became possessed by seeking revenge. Increasingly, his character mirrored Meghan’s,” says the book.
“Emotionally, he veered towards extremes. Simple dislikes became passionate hatred. ‘Meghan’s brainwashed Harry,’ Camilla told a friend.”

One day after the release of the excerpt, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex issued a statement in response.
“Mr. Bower’s commentary has long crossed the line from criticism into fixation,” a spokesperson for the couple shared with People. “This is someone who has publicly stated, ‘the monarchy in fact depends on actually obliterating the Sussexes from our state of life,’ language that speaks for itself.”
“He has made a career out of constructing ever more elaborate theories about people he does not know and has never met. Those interested in facts will look elsewhere; those seeking deranged conspiracy and melodrama know exactly where to find him.”
