Plain, bookish middle sister Mary Bennet (Ella Bruccoleri), who in Pride and Prejudice is overshadowed by Jane, Elizabeth, Kitty and Lydia and alternately ignored and belittled by her overbearing mother, takes center stage here.

After her sisters marry and her father dies, Mary’s evicted from the family home. So she decides to take a chance on a new life in London as a governess for her uncle’s children. Away from her sisters, Mary blossoms and before long, two gentlemen (Laurie Davidson and Dónal Finn) are vying for her hand.

The miniseries, with its virtuous and shady suitors, vexing relatives and gorgeous costumes, is an ideal way for Austen fans to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the beloved novelist’s birth.
