In director Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic 1818 novel, Oscar Isaac plays the egomaniacal Dr. Victor Frankenstein, who reanimates a corpse — actually several bodies patchworked together — a literal monster mash. He chains and beats his brainchild, then is shocked when his creation turns violent.

Jacob Elordi is heartwrenching as the hulking Creature, whose attempts to love and be loved are rebuffed by people turned off by his appearance. Told from both Victor’s and the Creature’s points of view, Frankenstein transcends the horror genre with a timely message about playing God (looking at you, A.I. creators!).
So visually dazzling it’s worth seeing in theaters, it also starts streaming on Netflix Nov. 7.
