Michelle Trachtenberg’s boyfriend, Jay Cohen, revealed he is taking the time he needs to grieve her death, offering a brief but heartfelt update to fans who are still mourning the beloved star following her untimely passing earlier this year.
Cohen, 63, spoke out for the first time about the late Gossip Girl actress via Instagram on Wednesday, July 9, on a post celebrating 26 years since he received a life-saving kidney transplant from a “selfless” donor, per Us Weekly.
One social media user took the opportunity to ask Cohen in the comment section if he could “talk” about Trachtenberg — who died at 39 in February — to which he responded with a heartbroken emoji, adding, “One day soon! I’m very sorry.”
Following the exchange, another person commented that it was “not cool” to ask Cohen about Trachtenberg on his private account.
“Thank you, it’s OK comes from the right place,” he replied. “Michelle was loved by so many.”
In his post, Cohen reportedly expressed gratitude to medical professionals at Cedars Sinai hospital in Los Angeles who gave him the best care he could hope for.

“We as human beings need to find a way to love and help all people in need,” he wrote in the caption, revealing his dedication to finding the silver lining while facing an unimaginable loss.
“As always, I’m still in the gym keeping my mind and body in shape, healthy and calm. Yes, I’ve added some very personal tattoos, when I look in the mirror as I wake and get ready for bed I remind myself of who I am, who I need to be and why I am,” Cohen continued his post. “I am so grateful to all of you who are in my life sharing our common joys, helping me with tragedies and healing from pain and grief. I’m sure many of you know what I mean when I write that.”
In 2020, insiders told Us Weekly that Cohen — who also served as Trachtenberg’s talent agent — had been dating the Harriet the Spy star for “over a year.” Trachtenberg ignited engagement rumors at the time by sharing photos of her large diamond ring but never clarified if they were planning to wed.
“I picked the right one,” she captioned the since-deleted image shared in October 2020.
Her last Instagram post about Cohen was just days before her death. “Happy Valentine’s Day to the man who sits still long enough for me to paint his face,” she gushed.
The former Buffy the Vampire Slayer star was tragically found dead in her New York City apartment on Feb. 26. Sources told People that same month that Trachtenberg had recently undergone a liver transplant and could have been facing complications.
The medical examiner later revealed to the outlet that her sudden death was a result of complications of diabetes mellitus. The manner of Trachtenberg’s death was ruled as natural.
