He’s looking for love! On April 22, ABC announced that retired NFL player turned attorney Mel Owens will be the next Golden Bachelor. “It’s been 24 hours of craziness,” the 66-year-old said, explaining that he’d just learned he’d been tapped for the dating show the day before.

The Michigan-born senior played as a linebacker for the Los Angeles Rams from 1981 to 1989 before transitioning to a career in the law. (The Orange County, Calif.- based single’s specialty is sports-related injuries.)

Unlike the first Golden Bachelor, widower Gerry Turner, Mel is divorced, with two sons from his 25-year marriage. His younger son put him up for the show! As for what he’s looking for, Mel’s wants are pretty humble. “The simple joys of companionship — sharing life’s everyday moments, making plans for the future and growing stronger together as a couple,” he said, adding, “Someone full of life, because it’s go time.”
