James Van Der Beek’s death at age 48 on Wednesday, February 11, has left his family trying to navigate a difficult future without him.
Moments after the Dawson’s Creek alum’s family issued a statement following his death, his Instagram page also shared a link to a GoFundMe campaign that was started by his wife, Kimberly, whom he met in 2009 on a trip to Israel.
The two married the following year, and they welcomed six children: Olivia in 2010, Joshua in 2012, Annabel Leah in 2014, Emilia in 2016, Gwendolyn in 2018, and Jeremiah in 2021.

In the GoFundMe, titled “Support for James Van Der Beek’s Family,” the family pointed out that Van Der Beek — who was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in August 2023 — died “after a long and courageous battle” with the disease.
“Throughout his illness, the family faced not only emotional challenges but also significant financial strain as they did everything possible to support James and provide for his care,” the GoFundMe stated.
“In the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future,” the campaign statement continued. “The costs of James’s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds. They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time.”

Thanking family and friends in advance for their support, the family said that money raised will help “cover essential living expenses, pay bills, and support the children’s education.”
The father of six made his cancer diagnosis public in November 2024.

In recent months, he was scheduled to reunite with his fellow Dawson’s Creek cast members in September, but dropped out at the last minute due to his health.
“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning,” read a post on his Instagram announcing his death. “He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace.”
“There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time,” the statement continued. “Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
