It seems like it would be a niche show — a drama about gay hockey players — but suddenly everyone’s talking about HBO Max’s Heated Rivalry. Based on novels by Rachel Reid, Heated Rivalry centers on hockey players Shane Hollander (Hudson) and Ilya Rozanov (Connor), who go from closeted rivals to lovers in the macho world of sports. No one was more surprised at their sudden fame than the relatively obscure actors, who thought they’d signed on for a small Canadian hockey show. But after its second day streaming, Heated Rivalry had hit No. 2. A second season — and a new book — are already in the works.

It helps that the chiseled stars have undeniable chemistry, but Connor throws cold water on speculation he and Hudson are more than besties. “For me, it doesn’t feel spicy at all,” the Odessa, Texas, native told Vulture of their many sex scenes, adding, “It’s only normal for people to try to transfer that over to mine and Hudson’s real life.”
