Harry Styles Reportedly Taps Music Legend as First Special Guest For Madison Square Garden Residency

Harry Styles is launching a 30-show residency at Madison Square Garden in August — and he’ll reportedly welcome a very special guest on opening night.

Music legend Billy Joel — who holds the residency record for the New York City arena — will join the One Direction alum, 31, onstage, Shuter reported on his Naughty But Nice Substack on Thursday, January 22.

“This is historic,” an insider told Shuter. “Billy doesn’t just show up for anyone. This is the Garden blessing the next generation.”

The “Piano Man” singer, 76, canceled all of his tour dates last May after being diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a condition that causes a buildup of spinal fluid in the brain, affecting hearing, vision and balance. He eventually returned with a surprise performance onstage in Florida on Friday, January 2.

But Joel, who has performed 150 shows at MSG, is ready to pass the torch to the “Sign of the Times” singer, sources told Shuter.

“Billy sees Harry as the future,” a source revealed. “He respects artists who can sell out nights on talent alone — no gimmicks.”

And the pair are planning an unforgettable evening for fans. “It’s not just a cameo,” another insider revealed. “Think emotional, cross-generational, and very New York.”

The English pop star, who rocked 15 sold-out shows at the venue in 2022, “is stepping into icon territory,” another source said. “And Billy Joel [is] handing him the keys to the Garden.”

Styles has even more surprises in store for the upcoming residency, which will be the only U.S. shows scheduled for his 2026 Together, Together tour. “It only gets bigger from here,” the source promised.
