Freddie Prinze Jr. had not seen fellow Hollywood icon Jennifer Love Hewitt for nearly two decades before they reunited to film 2025’s I Know What You Did Last Summer. Now, he’s shedding light on their dynamic following long-standing feud rumors.
“We run in different circles, so we just didn’t have that kind of a relationship. We were always professional and cool with each other, but we just weren’t bros,” he told Men’s Health in an interview released on Wednesday, July 23.
“I don’t have her phone number, so it’s not like we were talking like, ‘Hey, what do you want to do with these characters? What do you think? I don’t know. What do you think? I’m nervous, I’m scared, I’m excited.’ None of that stuff happened, but I figured she would be on board when I heard the idea,” Prinze Jr., 49, shared with the publication.
Hewitt, 46, and Prinze Jr. captivated audiences as Julie James and Ray Bronson in the original films, taking on the hook-wielding fisherman together in 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer — and again in 1998’s I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.
They reunited years later to film the recently released I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot.
“Sometimes you go to work with people and you don’t have a ton in common with them. You know what I mean? We were always cool and we would crack jokes and talk on set, but we never were like, ‘Hey, let’s trade numbers and go on a hike,’” he further explained.

Prinze Jr. echoed those sentiments in a new profile for Variety published July 19, telling the outlet that he and Hewitt had not caught up since their last stint as Ray and Julie.
“We care a lot about these characters, and it was all still there,” he said. “After we finished that first scene, we had a chance to say, ‘Oh, you have kids. And you have kids.’”
Prinze Jr. and fellow costar Sarah Michelle Gellar — who have been married since 2002 — share two kids together. As for Hewitt, she has three children with husband Brian Hallisay.
“Honestly, I think the first scene we share in this movie, where Ray and Julie confront the reality of their relationship, is the best work we’ve done of all three,” Prinze Jr. shared in the article. “I’m really proud of it. Our director, Jenn Robinson, three-dimensionalized these characters.”
His remarks came after Hewitt recently revealed that she has not seen Gellar — who starred as Helen Shivers in the original I Know What You Did Last Summer flick and has a cameo in the reboot — in decades either.
The Heartbreakers star squashed feud rumors in a profile for Vulture, published on July 18 — the same day the fourth installment of the franchise was released.
“I honestly don’t even know what that was or how that all came to be,” Hewitt told the outlet. “Why do we always have to be against each other and out for each other?”
“I haven’t seen Sarah. Literally, we’ve not talked since I saw her at 18 years old when the first movie came out,” she added. “On my side, we’re good. I have no idea where this is coming from.”
