Ellyn Jade and Star Slade Portray Friends on the Run in ‘Nika & Madison’
This Indigenous-Canadian twist on Thelma & Louise is the story of Madison (Star Slade) and Nika (Ellyn Jade). Once BFFs, Nika feels left behind when Madison leaves their First Nations community to go to university in Toronto.
During a visit home, Madison gets in a bar fight with a resentful local. When the cop who arrests her tries to sexually assault her, Nika swoops in, whacking him with a shovel. Knowing the legal system is stacked against them, the two go on the run. While the film is an eye-opening look at the injustices faced by Indigenous people, the women’s bond gives the gripping indie its emotional anchor.
