Dax Shepard Feels Like a ‘Weight’ Has Been Lifted After Writing About Sexual Abuse in Upcoming Book
Dax Shepard is adept at getting celebs to open up on his Armchair Expert podcast. But the 51-year-old hasn’t always felt so free himself.
On the March 2 episode, the Parenthood alum admitted his own unwillingness to explore the sexual abuse he suffered as a child. “I have for years on here been acknowledging that I had been molested, and that was its own hurdle to say that,” said the dad of two, with wife Kristen Bell, adding that he felt “shame” sharing details about the abuse. He especially struggled to put it down in writing while working on his upcoming memoir.
“The details were always going to be mine,” he said of his hesitancy. “I didn’t want anyone to be envisioning me [being abused]. It’s weird that that was still some wall between my shame.” The actor revealed it took him “months” to finally write that chapter. Now that it’s in black and white, he admitted, “there feels like a lot of weight is off my shoulders.”
