Daryl Hannah, an ex-girlfriend of the late John F. Kennedy Jr., has addressed her portrayal in the Ryan Murphy series Love Story — claiming that what is seen on TV is wildly inaccurate.
In a guest essay for the New York Times published Friday, March 6, the Kill Bill actress, now 65, said she feels it necessary to respond to the series — which follows JFK Jr.’s relationship with Carolyn Bessette following his split from Hannah — after allegedly receiving threats from viewers.
“I have generally chosen not to respond to media coverage of me,” she wrote in the Times. “But a recent tragedy-exploiting television series about John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette features a character using my name and presents her as me.”
Hannah, who had an on-off relationship with Kennedy, describes the Love Story character as “irritating, self-absorbed, whiny and inappropriate,” saying that is “not even a remotely accurate representation of my life, my conduct or my relationship with John.”
“I have never used cocaine in my life or hosted cocaine-fueled parties,” she wrote, referencing what is seen in the TV series. “I have never pressured anyone into marriage. I have never desecrated any family heirloom or intruded upon anyone’s private memorial. I have never planted any story in the press. I never compared Jacqueline Onassis’ death to a dog’s.”
Calling the portrayal “false” and “untrue,” Hannah pointed out that a TV show using “a real name” has “real-life consequences.”
“In the weeks since the series aired, I have received many hostile and even threatening messages from viewers who seem to believe the portrayal is factual,” she said. “When entertainment borrows a real person’s name, it can permanently impact her reputation.”
The Wall Street actress — who has been married to Neil Young since 2018 — acknowledged that she is in the public eye due to her career as an actress, but said: “My silence should not be mistaken for agreement with lies.”
She said that her work outside of acting “has focused on environmental advocacy, documentary filmmaking and animal-assisted therapy for seniors living with dementia and Alzheimer’s.”
“Like any career, doing good work requires an intact reputation,” she explained. “This is why I am choosing to stand up for myself now.”
Hannah and Kennedy, who met in the 1980s, were linked for approximately five years, breaking up in 1994. JFK Jr. went on to marry Bessette before the two died in a tragic plane crash in July 1999.
