John F. Kennedy Jr.’s family aren’t the only ones crying foul over Ryan Murphy’s new show, Love Story, which chronicles his ill-fated romance with wife Carolyn Bessette. A source tells Star that the late magazine publisher’s ex-girlfriend Daryl Hannah is “angry” and “upset” with the way she’s portrayed in the FX series.
“It was the most stressful time of her life. The level of attention on her was unbearable,” the source says of the Splash star, 65, who famously dated JFK Jr. on and off for five years before finally splitting in 1994.
“Having it all brought back up again is very traumatizing,” the source adds. “Even worse, they have put out this totally sensationalized and salacious version that paints her in a very bad light.”
Fans were pretty taken aback at the actress’ depiction, too.
“Love Story’s portrayal of Hannah as a whiny, coke-obsessed prima donna doesn’t quite ring true,” Vogue Culture Writer Emma Spector noted. “Indeed, if I were Hannah, I’d consider suing.”
There was nothing Hannah could do to stop it though, reveals Star’s source. “It’s outrageous to her that someone can profit off her life and just make up lies about her. She feels so helpless.”
Love Story has not only “reopened old wounds” for the Steel Magnolias star but also “brought back memories she’d rather keep buried,” says the source. “It’s put her in a really dark place.”
Fortunately, Hannah’s husband Neil Young has been “very supportive,” the source shares. “He’s been doing his best to comfort her, but it’s certainly not great for their relationship to have this ghost of JFK Jr. suddenly hovering over things.”
No man, not even the “Heart of Gold” singer, 80, “wants to hear about his woman’s ex-lovers and certainly not one that is known to be one of the greatest hunks of all time,” admits the source. “Poor Neil is very jealous but he’s having to swallow his feelings and help Daryl because she’s so down.”
