Scientists at Colossal Biosciences have introduced three genetically engineered canines modeled on the long-extinct dire wolf, marking what the company calls a significant step in its mission to bring back vanished species. Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi; the three animals at the center of the experiment, were recently united for the first time at Colossal’s 2,000-acre secure facility.
The company, based in Texas, released footage of the moment on its YouTube channel this week. Romulus and Remus, both male, have already grown to over 90 pounds, surpassing the size of most modern wolves. The pair were raised together and have formed a close bond. Khaleesi, a female born nearly three months later, was introduced following a carefully controlled preparation period.
“The integration was a success,” said one of the project’s lead scientists. “Romulus showed interest without aggression, while Remus responded with a calm and gentle demeanor. That’s exactly the kind of behavior we were hoping for.”

The introduction process involved weeks of planning, observation, and behavioral conditioning. Scientists took no shortcuts, monitoring responses and adjusting their methods as needed to avoid any social stress that could jeopardize the group’s cohesion.
Going forward, Khaleesi will spend time individually with each of her brothers, a method intended to foster pack dynamics and build mutual trust. Researchers say this isn’t just about seeing whether the animals can coexist; it’s about nurturing the complex social behaviors that define wolf packs.
Colossal Biosciences launched in 2021 as the first company dedicated exclusively to de-extinction. While the dire wolf is one of its most high-profile projects, the company has also announced plans to revive the woolly mammoth and dodo bird through advanced gene editing techniques.

The dire wolf, once widespread across North America, went extinct more than 10,000 years ago. Unlike cloning, Colossal’s approach combines ancient DNA with traits from living species to produce hybrids that closely resemble the original animal.
Although the company’s goals have drawn skepticism from conservationists and ethicists, Colossal maintains that its research could have broader applications in biodiversity preservation and ecosystem restoration.
“These animals aren’t just part of a scientific process,” the company said in a statement. “They’re the beginning of something much bigger, a new chapter in the story of Earth’s wildlife.”
