CBS Golden Globes Broadcast Sees Sharp Ratings Drop Despite Viral Highlights
The Golden Globes may have delivered meme-worthy hilarity and A-list star power, but audiences still weren’t buying it.
According to Nielsen data cited by Deadline, the 83rd Golden Globe Awards drew 8.66 million viewers on CBS, marking a 7 percent decline from last year’s 9.27 million live and same-day viewers.
For context, back in 2020, the Globes averaged 18.3 million viewers, per the outlet.
Buzzy moments from host Nikki Glaser, surprise winners, and emotional acceptance speeches couldn’t stop the rating’s slide.
Glaser’s monologue — which roasted everyone from President Donald Trump to CBS News — lit up social media, and Teyana Taylor’s tearful Best Supporting Actress win sparked some of the night’s biggest reactions.
Timothée Chalamet also brought major energy with his Best Actor win for Marty Supreme, beating Hollywood heavyweights like Leonardo DiCaprio and George Clooney. Even Sean Penn caused a stir by lighting up several cigarettes.
Still, the show lacked one major ratings booster: an NFL lead-in. Last year’s Globes benefited from football viewers rolling directly into the broadcast, but this year’s early Bills–Jaguars matchup gave fans plenty of time to switch the channel.
