Lyric McHenry was found dead in a desolate part of the Bronx early on Tuesday, August 14. The 26-year-old was 20 weeks pregnant. She was close friends with Magic Johnson’s son, E.J. Johnson, and she had produced and appeared on his short-lived reality show, EJNYC.
Lyric turned 26 on August 6, and just last night was out partying with friends at the Frederick Hotel, the SoHo Grand and Dream Downtown in lower Manhattan. She was found sprawled out on the sidewalk above the Major Deegan Expressway at 5 a.m.
A local resident told The New York Daily News, “She shouldn’t have been on this block at nighttime. I’m a man, and I wouldn’t walk down here by myself. That’s a fact.” Her knees were bruised, but she had no other visible injuries.
She was found in nothing but a pajama top and a pair of underwear. Police sources told The Daily News that a small ziplock bag with cocaine in it was found on her, leading them to suspect that she died of an overdose. An autopsy will be done to determine the cause of death. Police are investigating whether she was dumped on the sidewalk.
According to her Instagram, she and E.J. have been friends a long time. She wrote on his birthday in 2015, “Happy Birthday to my twin brother and partner in crime @ejjohnson_ . I love you as much as I did when we thought we were getting married at 5. ??” She was posting on her Instagram Stories up to 1 a.m. last night.
She graduated from Stanford in 2010 and received the prestigious Ron Brown scholarship.
Lyric also worked on President Barack Obama’s first presidential campaign. In January 2017, Lyric posted a photo of herself with Former First Lady Michelle Obama. She wrote in the caption, “Working for this campaign made my awkward stage at 15 so much doper. Thank you to the Obamas for inspiring us, leading with love and intellect, bringing art and artists to the White House, and also Sasha and Malia ❤??.”
