Despite a 14-year age difference, Julianne Hough and Ryan Seacrest dated for nearly three whole years before deciding to call it quits in March 2013. For the most part, both stars have remained tight-lipped about the split, but now that the Footloose star has moved onto pro hockey player Brooks Laich, it looks like things have changed.

“Every relationship, there was nothing wrong or bad, but there was nothing right,” Julianne admitted to Redbook of her previous boyfriends. “I had one foot out because I didn’t want to get hurt and I didn’t say what was on my mind because I didn’t want to ruffle any feathers. I needed to be perfect.”

The 25-year-old added that her perspective has changed in her new relationship, which began last December. “Now I’m not holding anything back, because I’d rather get my heart broken than never know what it is to be completely, madly in love,” she explained. “If I had been this open in my last relationship…who knows?”

But what exactly was it that changed the former Dancing With the Stars professional to open up? “I had this epiphany when my family went to a six-day seminar [last November] about creating our own destiny,” she said. “I was not into that at first, but I learned so much about myself and why my relationships didn’t work that by the end I was on a high. I was seeing a couple people, but immediately [pretends to text guy], ‘You are nice, but this is going nowhere.’ The next day, my Curve costar introduced [Brooks and me.] It couldn’t have been a better time. We’ve been open and honest from day one.”
