You won’t find Demi Lovato pounding shots and partying on her 21st birthday (today, Aug. 20)! Instead, the singer is currently in Kenya, Africa, where she’s working with the global charity Free the Children. During the trip, which she took with family and friends, the 21-year-old will help build a school and take a sunset safari.
She left for Africa on Aug. 14, after the organization came to her with a mock itinerary that just happened to fall on her birthday. “I was like, ‘OK it’s a sign, I get it,'” she explained. Ever since Demi’s rehab stint in 2010, she doesn’t drink, so the trip was a perfect alternative to the usual party one might expect on their 21st.
About the trip, Demi said, “With 21 being a milestone birthday, I wanted a memorable and meaningful way to celebrate, rather than throw a big birthday bash. I knew traveling with Me to We and volunteering with Free The Children would give me the opportunity to have a life-changing experience I would never forget, with the people closest to me. Also having worked with the organization over this past year it’s been great to see first-hand the wonderful work that is being done as a result of all the incredible efforts of young people around the nation.”
When she gets back, though, Demi will have a full load of work ahead of her. She’s set to star in a six-episode arc on Glee, beginning with Season 5’s second episode, airing Oct. 3. Then, of course, she’ll be back in the judge’s chair when the live rounds of The X-Factor begin later this fall.
