UNINHIBITED FUN

Mustique — less than three square miles surrounded by sandy white beaches and turquoise water — has always been a special place for Prince William and Princess Kate. Their first visit dates back to 2008, and they returned for two of Kate’s babymoons, as well as George’s sixth birthday in 2019. Thanks to the island’s strict no-fly zone, guests on the island, which has just 500 residents, are afforded complete and utter privacy. “William and Kate have always loved it here,” an islander tells Star. “It’s where they can be themselves — away from the cameras, just enjoying life like any other couple.”

That sense of freedom was on full display during one night out (no kids allowed!) at Basil’s Bar, the cozy watering hole favored by locals and the prince and princess (an employee at the nearby grocery store saw Kate arrive via private boat). The pair timed their visit to the island’s beloved Blues Festival, and Basil’s longtime waiter reveals William and Kate “blended right in” during a raucous evening of live music and revelry, during which William pounded cocktails and the duo couldn’t keep their hands off each other.

“Of course they let loose, even Kate!” the waiter tells Star, adding, “They were drinking and dancing all night. It’s a party — the Blues Festival is always a good time.” (The waiter discreetly noted that William and Kate were “generous tippers,” adding, “They take care of us like we take care of them.”)

They’ve become regulars at the legendary laid-back beach establishment, reveals a bartender, noting that William even has a favorite perch. “Right by the TV in the corner, so he can watch sports — he loves his games,” the bartender told Star while gesturing to a small nook.

According to the bartender, William’s bevvy of choice is a vodka cranberry. “Even though we’ve got all the frozen drinks and rum punch specials you could want, he keeps it simple.” The couple has no airs when it comes to the unpretentious menu.

“The food is family style — there’s a large oven where they make flatbreads, but mostly it’s lots of grilled meats,” says the islander. And they don’t even flinch at the bar’s, um, rustic restrooms. “Basil’s is a total beach shack,” the islander adds. “The toilets are no different!”
