Like the 2000 box-office smash that launched Russell Crowe’s career, this sequel has legions of armor-clad men fighting to the death.

The action starts 20 years after the demise of Crowe’s Maximus, when twin emperors Caracalla (Fred Hechinger) and Geta (Joseph Quinn) rule Rome with a cruelty that would impress Nero.

To shield him from the power struggles of the capital, the young Roman aristocrat Lucius (Mescal) has been sent by his mother (Connie Nielsen) to Numidia, on the northern coast of Africa.

But then Roman forces led by General Marcus Acacius (Pascal) invade Numidia, take Lucius prisoner and bring him back to Rome, where a powerhungry arms merchant (Washington) tries to manipulate the young man into helping him seize power by — guess what — fighting in the Colosseum!

A.I. effects — the gladiators face off against a giant marauding rhinoceros and savage rampaging monkeys with razorsharp teeth and a naval battle rages in a flooded amphitheater while sharks lurk in the water — dial the action up to XI! But there’s also touching human drama — as when Lucius discovers a life-changing secret about his parentage that spurs him to fight even harder for the people of Rome.
