For the last seven weeks, Pharrell’s hit single “Happy” has held the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, but the singer revealed to Oprah Winfrey that its success was not something he expected.
“Zero airplay, nothing,” he said in an interview on Oprah Prime. “And the next thing you know, we put out the video on Nov. 21, and all of a sudden — BOOM! I mean, when I say boom…I mean…Boom!”
The singer was then brought to tears while watching a montage of fans getting their “Happy” on. “Why am I crying on Oprah?” he managed to finally get out. “It’s overwhelming because I love what I do and I just appreciate the fact that people believed in me for so long, that I could make it to this point.”
Pharrell performed the Oscar-nominated song at the Academy Awards this year.
