The Steinbrenner family, principal owners of the New York Yankees and longtime philanthropists, has donated $5 million to St. Josephs Childrens Hospital in Tampa, Fal., strengthening their ongoing commitment to pediatric health care.

The contribution will support the expansion of the hospitals emergency and trauma services, continuing a decades-long relationship between the family and the medical center.

The donation builds on the familys legacy as the naming donor of the Steinbrenner Childrens Emergency and Trauma Center. Funds will help expand and unify the emergency department, adding treatment rooms, upgrading diagnostic equipment, and enhancing staff training programs. These improvements are part of a larger effort to establish a free-standing childrens hospital by 2030, to be named the Pagidipati Childrens Hospital at St. Josephs.

The Steinbrenners support of St. Josephs dates back to the early 1990s when George and Joan Steinbrenner, after seeking emergency care for their grandchild, advocated for a dedicated pediatric emergency center. Their efforts led to the creation of the Steinbrenner Childrens Emergency and Trauma Center, now a Level II state-certified pediatric trauma facility that serves thousands of young patients each year.

“The Steinbrenner family has been a cherished part of the St. Josephs Childrens Hospital family for generations, and their unwavering commitment to our mission continues to change lives,” Kate Sawa, President of St. Josephs Childrens Hospital Foundation, said in a statement. “Their legacy of generosity will continue to make a profound impact in Tampa Bay and beyond for years to come.”

Jennifer Steinbrenner Swindal, who serves on the Board of Trustees for St. Josephs Hospitals Foundation, emphasized her familys dedication to helping children.

“As a family, we are honored to support St. Josephs Childrens Hospital and its mission to provide world-class pediatric care,” she said. “Being able to positively impact the prospects of those facing adversity was a point of pride for my father, and naturally, he gravitated toward charitable efforts that benefited the welfare of children. Our family continues to be motivated by that same spirit, and we are proud to provide resources that will raise the level of care for the youngest and most vulnerable members of our community.”

A ceremonial check presentation will take place before the Yankees game against Toronto at George M. Steinbrenner Field Friday

St. Josephs Childrens Hospital, the leading provider of pediatric care in Tampa Bay, will continue to expand its services with the construction of the new facility, ensuring greater access to specialized care for children throughout the region.
