Love, Lies & Green Cards: Bowen Yang and Han Gi-chan Star in Rom-Com Remake of The Wedding Banquet

Min (Han Gi-chan) needs a green card to stay in the U.S. with his boyfriend, Chris (Bowen Yang), but he doesn’t want to jeopardize his trust fund from his wealthy, old-fashioned Korean grandparents by coming out as gay.

What’s a guy in love to do but marry his boyfriend’s close friend Angela (Kelly Marie Tran)? In return, Min will give Angela and her girlfriend, Lee (Lily Gladstone), money to pursue IVF.

That’s when a classic rom-com plot is hatched. The foursome is on the verge of pulling off the scheme when Min’s suspicious grandmother (Youn Yuh-jung) shows up in Seattle to meet her future granddaughter-in-law.

Min and Angela’s attempts to play it straight — and pretend they’re really in love — go about as well as expected.

Joan Chen is especially hilarious as Angela’s mother, who embraces her identity as an LGBTQ+ ally a little too wholeheartedly. Although the remake of Ang Lee’s 1993 Oscar-nominated film loses steam when it veers into earnestness, it quickly recovers its comic footing.
