King Charles III waved to well-wishers during a state visit to Italy, where he and Queen Camilla attended a lavish banquet in Rome on their 20th wedding anniversary April 9. The monarch looked sharp in black tie, wearing his U.K. Order of Merit ribbon around his neck along with the Italian Order of Merit star — but the 76-year-old almost missed the couple’s first international trip of the year.

On March 27, Buckingham Palace announced that his majesty, who disclosed a cancer diagnosis in February 2024, was canceling some engagements after suffering a setback following routine medical treatment, saying, “The King experienced temporary side effects that required a short period of observation in hospital.

That wasn’t Charles’ only recent near miss. Once again, the king was conveniently unavailable when his younger, estranged son, Prince Harry, 40, arrived in London from his home in Montecito, Calif., April 6 to attend a two-day court appeal concerning his security arrangements in the U.K.

“Charles was resting at his Highgrove estate ahead of his trip to Italy when Harry landed,” an insider tells Star.

“Word is, no invitation was sent.” The last time the king saw Harry, who is fifth in line to the throne (after big brother, Prince William, and his three kids) was shortly after Charles’ diagnosis.

Says the source, “Their relationship is in a broken state.”
