George Lucas Finally Reveals Why Yoda Speaks Backwards in ‘Star Wars’ Films
He’s powerful with the Force, but Yoda has never been very good with the English language. Now creator George Lucas has finally revealed why the beloved Star Wars character’s sentences seem to come out backwards.
During a conversation with TCM’s Ben Mankiewicz, the 81-year-old explained that he wanted to make sure the little green guy’s words of wisdom had an impact.
“I had to figure out a way to get people to actually listen — especially 12-year-olds,” the director said at the celebration of the 45th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back in Los Angeles, adding, “If you speak regular English, people won’t listen that much. But if he had an accent, or it’s really hard to understand what he’s saying, they focus on what he’s saying.” Makes sense, that does!
