Demi Lovato is looking back on the early days of her relationship with now-husband Jutes.
In a cover story with Who What Wear published Wednesday, November 19, the “Fast” singer, 33, opened up about meeting the 34-year-old Canadian musician (real name Jordan Lutes) amid her sobriety journey.
“Every album that I’ve written has served its purpose,” said Lovato, adding that 2022’s Holy Fvck was “the most healing” and is also the reason she met Jutes. The two had a songwriting session for her eighth studio album in January 2022.
“We became friends before we became lovers,” said Lovato, who has been open about her struggles with substance abuse following a near-fatal drug overdose in 2018.
“I opened up to him because I was going through a really rough time when I made Holy Fvck,” she continued. “I had just come out of treatment, and I was newly sober and raw with my emotions. I had nothing to medicate with. He was there for me as a friend, helping me get through this deep depression I was in.”

The “Confident” singer said that during their songwriting session for “Happy Ending,” he “made me feel safe with him.”
The musicians were married on May 25 at the Bellosguardo in Santa Barbara, though Lovato admitted to Who What Wear she once imagined she would have already tied the knot by this point in her life.
“I had expected to be married by a certain age,” she confessed. “There’s all this pressure that society puts on you, but it just organically happened. I’m really happy. I told my husband today, ‘I’ve never been more in love with you. I didn’t know my love could grow for you more so than it already has.’ The timing was perfect.”
Following their wedding day, Jutes called himself “the luckiest man alive,” writing on Instagram: “Just married my soulmate/best friend and it was easily the best day of my life. Thank you to all our friends and family who celebrated with us.”
