Mark Hoppus famously begins Blink-182’s 1999 track “What’s My Age Again?” with lyrics about getting ready for a date. Months later, he found himself on a real-life — but “awful” — date with one of the biggest TV stars of the ‘90s: Melissa Joan Hart.

In an excerpt from the pop-punk singer’s new memoir, Fahrenheit-182, Hoppus, now 53, recalls how he first met the Sabrina the Teenage Witch star, now 48, at the 1999 Teen Choice Awards — a meeting that led to their admittedly “tough” date.

“She must’ve found me interesting because she had her publicist reach out to my label’s publicist to give me her number. Totally normal courtship,” the rocker quipped, according to the excerpt published by Entertainment Weekly. Hoppus tried to impress Hart on the phone as they set up the date, he recalled, remembering how he “played it cool” and how he thought he was “so slick using this Hollywood industry jargon.”

Looking back, “I doubt it impressed her,” he wrote. “I was newly famous, but she had been famous for years.”

As for the outing itself, the pair chatted over sushi at a restaurant in the San Fernando Valley — but Hoppus quickly realized they weren’t a match.

“It was an awful date. She was very nice, but we weren’t connecting,” he wrote. “Everything in her life revolved around acting, and it was hard to relate to her about anything else.”

To be fair, he said, “I’m sure from her perspective, all I could talk about was music.”

While the date may have been awkward, the pair’s night out didn’t end at the restaurant — Hart took Hoppus back to her place, the “I Miss You” rocker wrote. After showing him her hot tub, Hoppus claimed, he got the idea that the Clarissa Explains It All star may have been “hinting we should get in the tub.” That’s when the date was over.

Hoppus “had an early set time,” he told Hart, who drove him back to his hotel.

“We just weren’t a great match,” he wrote in the memoir. “It was tough.”

Later that night, Hoppus recalled talking with Skye Everly, whom he married one year later. Hart wed husband Mark Wilkerson in 2003.
