Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s infamous elevator scandal from 2014 is back in the headlines after a fashion designer came forward with a theory about what sparked the chaos – and it’s stirred up more drama for the pair as they struggle to put the incident behind them almost 12 years on.
“They hate that people are still probing to find out exactly what happened that night,” a source tells Star. “It’s become this perennial dark cloud hanging over their marriage that’s been a major source of stress and embarrassment that seems destined to haunt them forever.”

In an interview published on Thursday, December 4, fashion designer Oscar G. Lopez told the Daily Mail that drama ensued after Jay-Z, 55, ran into Rachel Roy at the 2014 Met Gala in Manhattan. A former Rocawear intern, Roy, 51, has long been speculated to be the “Becky with the good hair” that Beyoncé, 44, references when alluding husband’s infidelity on the album Lemonade, though she vehemently insists that there’s “no validity” to the rumors.
“I think that Jay-Z complimented her about the gown,” alleged Lopez, who designed the black lace dress that Roy wore to the star-studded event, “and Beyoncé’s sister [Solange] felt that it was not proper.”
At the time, TMZ obtained security footage from a Met Gala afterparty at The Standard, High Line that shows the 39-year-old singer lunging at her brother-in-law, 55, in the elevator, hitting and kicking him until a man, believed to be a bodyguard, intervenes.

“The fact it’s still being debated is driving Jay up the wall,” says the source. “He wishes people would just let it go already but every so often someone pops up with another version of events and he’s put through the wringer with all the wild conspiracy theories that blow up online.”
As for what really went down on the elevator, Star’s source reveals that Jay-Z is “constantly fearful” of it one day getting out. “The biggest danger is that Solange will come forward,” says the source, adding that it’s fallen on Beyoncé to keep her sister from speaking out. “Because, by all accounts, any tell-all would be Jay’s worst nightmare.”
