Anne Hathaway stars as a pop star in crisis in Mother Mary, a supernatural drama about female friendship, witchy rituals and show-stopping musical performances in theaters April 17.
Anne Hathaway plays Mother Mary, a Lady Gaga/Taylor Swift–level pop star who cancels a major tour when she has an emotional crisis. She seeks solace — and a dress she believes will save her career — with her long-estranged best friend and former costume designer, Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel). But their wounds are too deep and Sam can’t just kiss and make up without some psychic intervention. Cue the séances and witchy rituals.
But this supernatural-tinged drama also has some serious musical cred — Hathaway is fierce, singing onstage as the diva. She even cowrote one of the songs, “Burial,” with Charli XCX, George Daniel and Jack Antonoff. Plus, FKA Twigs costars and composed another of the songs. (Designer Bina Daigeler also deserves a major shoutout — and an Oscar— for her Gaga-worthy costumes.)
While it has lots of cool trappings — show-stopping performances, paranormal interventions — ultimately this is a story about female friendship, which is always music to our ears.
