BEAUTIFUL BEACHES, FRIENDLY LOCALS AND A STRICT NO-FLY ZONE HAVE MADE THE ISLE A TOP DESTINATION FOR ROYALS AND CELEBS.

The tranquil, 1,400-acre island became a haven for the rich and famous in the 1960s, gaining popularity after British socialite Colin Tennant gifted Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth II’s younger sister, a plot of land as a wedding present. She later called villa Les Jolies Eaux “the only place I can relax.”

In recent years, Mustique has been the go-to spot for royals, billionaires (Formula 1 magnate Lawrence Stroll built a gleam- ing glass gym for his race-car–driving son at his waterfront mansion) and such celebs as Mick Jagger (who owns two villas) and Shania Twain.

Despite hefty price tags — the nightly rates at the island’s only hotel run about $1,000 — the vibe is casual and understated. “There’s the beauty and serenity of the Caribbean,” says a source, “and a total sense of privacy.”
