“Douchebag,” he said to the reporter. “What is a douchebag? Would it be really easy to assume that I was a douchebag? Definitely. One hundred percent. But that doesn’t mean that I am. Or maybe I am, I don’t know.”
The “douchebag” image began when the singer’s band, Maroon 5, blew up years ago — he moved into the Chateau Marmont and reportedly romanced a slew of celebrity women. “Um, all right,” he explained. “All of a sudden, I had money in my bank account. I hadn’t had a break in a long time. And I went a little f—ing nuts. You know? And I deserved to go a little bit nuts. And I had the time of my life.”
Now, those days of trolling women are over. In fact, Adam is engaged to Victoria’s Secret model Behati Prinsloo, and they’re set to tie the knot this summer. “She’s the coolest person in the world,” he gushed of his bride-to-be.
But, don’t forget, this is the third VS model that the 35-year-old has dated. “I don’t date what a person does,” he defended himself. “I date the f—ing person. You know what I mean? I could have been a zitty teenager and walked into Tower Records, and we would have talked about Pearl Jam, and we would have fallen in love when were 15.”
“Preference should never be looked down upon,” he added. “Unless it’s based on something really sh—y.”
In the end, Adam comes up with three criteria that make up a “douchebag.” For starters, a lack of self-awareness. “Levine is definitely self-aware,” the reporter points out. Second, arrogance. “I’m not arrogant,” Adam said. “I’m cocky. It’s different. Cocky is playful.” And last, insecurity. “I’m confident,” he revealed. “Some people don’t like confidence. They resent confidence.”
In conclusion, The Voice judge tells his interviewer what he wants people to get out of this interview: “You don’t have to like me,” he said. “But I’d prefer it if you did.”
