It’s been a whirlwind few years for Zendaya Coleman! The actress made a name for herself outside her Disney Channel image by competing on Dancing With the Stars (and coming in second place!), and releasing her first single, “Replay.”
“When I first heard the song, I was obsessed with it,” she said during an interview on Veria Living Live. “It was something that I was like, this song — no matter what — I have to record it, it has to be mine. At the time, we had to change some lyrics and make it fit me. Also, being that I was a younger artist, we had to find that happy medium between being mature and growing up, but also being appropriate.”
Still, while the song has had great success, the 17-year-old attributes her time on DWTS as her real breakout phase. “It kind of opened me up to a new fanbase,” she explained. “A new generation that didn’t really know who I was before. That kind of started the growing up process.”
In fact, the experience was so great for Zendaya, that she is still great friends with her partner on the show, Val Chmerkovskiy. “I’m really close with Val, he’s my big brother,” she said. “Ever since the show, his family has become my family, my family has become his family. I stayed really close with him.”
And while she wouldn’t admit who she thought was hotter — Val, or his brother Maksim Chmerkovskiy — the teen star did reveal her celeb crush — Channing Tatum!
