VIDEO: Spencer & Heidi Talk Money, The Hills & More!

Four years ago, Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt were living in luxury while they portrayed a villainous couple on MTV’s hit reality show The Hills. Now, the duo has blown through most of their money, and are living a much more frugal lifestyle while, for the most part, out of the spotlight.

During an interview with Bethenny Frankel on her talk show Bethenny on Feb. 5, the couple opened up about their spending habits. “You know, we were really so young,” Heidi admitted. “Like, I started The Hills when I was 18-years-old and you make a lot of mistakes in your twenties. I just made them on a big, magnified scale…and they were high stakes.”

Now, the duo says they’re living “very humble, small scale lives,” omitting the $3,000/night dinners they used to attend. “We didn’t really think about our futures,” Heidi added. “Now we’re at a point where, well, maybe one day we do want a family, maybe we do want to own a piece of land, a home. We limited our own future and now we need to be more responsible and learn and figure out where we go from here.”

Much like Kristin Cavallari and Lo Bosworth have done recently, the famously dubbed “Speidi” also dished on whether or not their reality show was real. “On our show, we knew the stakes — the bonuses if the ratings went up,” Spencer revealed. “So no one forced us to do anything.”

“In the beginning it was more real,” added Heidi. “And then, as it progressed, it got a little bit fake, and then more fake, and then everything is fake before you know it.”

Specifically, the couple remembers the infamous scene where he kicked her out of a car — and also something we didn’t see! According to Spencer, the producers wanted him to walk out on his bride on their wedding day, so she could have a happy ending with former BFF Lauren [Conrad]. “That’s where we decided, we have to draw the line somewhere,” Heidi said. “That was the beginning of drawing the line with them and it was toward the end we were like, ‘We’ve done so much crap for you guys — the fact that you’re trying to ruin our day…it was like, that was our line.”

Although Heidi and Lauren had a major “aw” moment during that wedding episode, they certainly didn’t rekindle the friendship they once had. But will they ever be friends again? “I would never say never…I’ve learned that,” Heidi explained. “But I would say most likely not.”

“I just think, from my perspective, she’s so solid in her brand and her statements she’s made: ‘Forgive and forget,'” Spencer chimed in. “It would be hard for her to look like a hypocrite, maybe. She always said we’ll never last. Now, we are eight years together — so clearly you’re wrong!”
