On June 12, 2016, 49 people were killed and 58 others were injured in a shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Omar Mateen was the gunman who committed the terrorist attack/hate crime who also died that day.
One year later, hundreds gathered at the nightclub to pay their respects and honor the victims. The Mayor, Buddy Dyer, said during his speech at the memorial: I realize that gathering here in this place, at this hour, is beyond difficult. But I also know that the strength you’ve shown over the past year will carry you through today and in the future.”
Orlando officials have also named today “love and kindness” days and are encouraging people to perform random acts of kindness in remembrance.
