Way back in 2015, Netflix released Making A Murderer, a ten-episode documentary about Steven Avery, who was wrongfully convicted of sexual assault, freed, and then convicted of murder. The show captivated a nation as fans wondered if he and nephew Brendan Dassey really did kill Teresa Halbach. Now, Making A Murderer: Part 2 documents the phenomenon and the quest to finally get Steven and Brandon freed. Watch the trailer above.
The trailer touches on the popularity of the first season and how it took Steven aback.
“You know some people they feel really bad or sad that everything happened to me, and sometimes it feels like you want to cry but you can’t,” he says as old photos fly across the screen. “I’m kind of shocked sometimes. I didn’t think all of these people would care.”
The popularity of the show helped Steven get a new attorney, Kathleen Zellnor, who’s fighting for his release. “If this case is solid, if he’s guilty – I’ll fail,” she says in the footage.
The trailer also hints that the show will focus on attempts to get Brendan out of jail and the bigger struggle for reform in the criminal justice system. The season promises to give “an in-depth look at the high-stakes post-conviction process, exploring the emotional toll the process takes on all involved.”
Making a Murderer filmmakers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos said of the new season in a statement, “Steven and Brendan, their families and their legal and investigative teams have once again graciously granted us access, giving us a window into the complex web of American criminal justice. Building on Part One, which documented the experience of the accused, in Part Two, we have chronicled the experience of the convicted and imprisoned, two men each serving life sentences for crimes they maintain they did not commit.”
