Ethan Couch Crash Survivor Had Soccer Star Goal Before Boozed Teen Left Him Paralyzed

Sergio Malina’s brother details horrific incident in shocking new show.

On June 15, 2013, Texas resident Ethan Couch ran over and killed four pedestrians following a night of booze and drugs with friends. The wealthy youth—who came to be known as the Affluenza Teen—was charged with substance intoxication and manslaughter, and sent to jail for about two years. He was released earlier this year.

Now, REELZ’s docuseries Scandal Made Me Famous: Affluenza Teen, gives viewers troubling details about the reckless incident, and dives into the life of one of the Couch’s most well-known survivors.

“One of those cases involved Sergio Malina, who was riding in the back of the truck when it crashed,” says “Scandal Me Famous’” Steve Helling in the show teaser. “This former soccer player was left paralyzed.”

“All our lives he had a goal set for him: to be one of the most famous soccer players in the world. He was being prepared when he was in high school. He was literally getting ready, finding a way to get a scholarship,” adds Malina’s brother, Alexander Lemus.

Before the family filed a civil lawsuit against Couch’s family, they reached out to them for help, but the teen’s parents refused.

Scandal Made Me Famous: Affluenza Teen airs Saturday, August 4 at 9:00 ET / PT on REELZ.
