Cory Monteith's Mother Says The Loss Of Her Son Has Been "Horrendous"

ABC News | ABC Sports News

For the first time since his death, Cory Monteith‘s mom Ann McGregor is speaking publicly about her son.

McGregor was interviewed earlier this week in her hometown of Vancouver, British Columbia in recognition of the one-year anniversary of Monteith’s death.

“The loss is horrendous, until three days ago I couldn’t look at a picture of Cory… So there’s been progress,” she told Good Morning America.

The Glee star passed away on July 13, 2013 at the age of 31 in his native Vancouver. The autopsy revealed the actor’s death was caused by a “mixed drug toxicity.”

McGregor talked about her son’s struggle with drug addiction during his life. “Cory was 15, he did a code blue, and I think that was the turning point,” Monteith’s mother explained about his early problems with drugs. “He had a lot of emotional things he was trying to figure out – a lot of it was he really wanted a relationship with his father. I think when a child gets invalidated they keep reaching even harder. They want to find out why.”

Monteith’s father Joe Monteith has been estranged from the family ever since his divorce from McGregor and was not even invited to the actor’s funeral.

McGregor says that no one in Monteith’s life could have helped him. “I don’t think we have power to change the choices they’re making,” she said about her son. “I think with the kind of connection Cory and I had, if we couldn’t prevent the situation, I don’t have the answer.”

Monteith’s former girlfriend Lea Michele is still very much in contact with McGregor. The actress texts and emails McGregor and says about Monteith’s former Glee co-star, “She’s hurting too… you see the sadness. I know her pain.”
