The prosecution, however, saw the circumstances surrounding Reeva's death very differently, and argued the killing had been a deliberate act that had followed a heated argument between the former flames.

South African judge Thokozile Masipa agreed with the prosecution. However, the double amputee was given six years in prison out of the possible 15 he was initially facing.

The reason behind the shocking verdict? "He's a fallen hero, he's lost his career and he's ruined financially. The worst is that having taken life of a fellow human being in the manner that he did he cannot be at peace," judge Masipa explained.

"Recovery is possible, but it will depend mostly on the accused. It must be one of the most difficult things for any accused to have to face the victims of his crime and to apologize," he added.
