Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s royal tour of Africa is off to an emotional start. During an impassioned speech on September 23, the Duchess of Sussex spoke personally to the women of South Africa, saying that she connected to them as a woman of color.
The 38-year-old was speaking at Justice Desk in Nyanga township. The organization is one of many supported by the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust. They teach women and children about self-awareness and safety, including giving self defense training.
During her talk, Meghan said, “And just on one personal note, may I just say that while I’m here with my husband as a member of the Royal Family… I am here with you as a mother, as a wife, as a woman, as a woman of color and as your sister.”
South Africa is currently going through a spike in violence against women and children. The surge has sparked protests throughout the country. According to the BBC, men murdered approximately 2,700 women and 1,000 children in the country last year. Over the same period, an average of 100 rapes were reported each day.

During the same visit, Harry, 35, also spoke about the “cycle” of misogyny. “No man is born to cause harm to women,” he said.

He added, “It's about redefining masculinity. It's about creating your own footprints for your children to follow in, so that you can make a positive change for the future.”

During the second day of their tour on September 24, the couple visited a mental wellness group. Then Harry made a solo outing to learn about the poaching of abalone, a fleshy sea snail considered a delicacy in some parts of the world.

Then, Meghan changed into a green maxi dress from
STAUD and a head scarf to visit the Auwal Mosque, the oldest mosque in the country. It was built in 1794 during the British occupation.

The duke and duchess’s trip to Africa is
the first royal tour for baby Archie, 4 months. The baby was sighted on Monday at the airport, but has yet to appear at an official event.

But the locals have been asking the royal couple about their son. “Where’s Archie?” one onlooker asked the couple as she hugged them.

“He’s sleeping,” Harry explained. When another fan asked the baby’s whereabouts, the prince said, “He’s not grouchy, just exhausted.”

On Tuesday morning, the couple, who married in May last year, complimented the other’s parenting skills. Harry called his wife “the best mum,” while Meghan said her husband is “the best dad.”

The royal tour will last ten days and end in Johannesburg.
