After a long and slightly overdue pregnancy, 23-year-old Jessa Duggar and her husband Ben Seewald, 20, became proud parents on Nov. 5. It’s a boy! And his name is…Spurgeon Elliot Seewald.
The unusual name choice is a very special one for the couple, with deep historical significance, as Ben explains in a video Jessa posted Nov. 11. "Charles Spurgeon was a preacher who lived back in the 19th century and he had a big impact on our lives."
The middle name of the Duggar family's newest member is equally symbolic. "Elliot, that was the last name of Jim Elliot and Elizabeth Elliot, and Jim Elliot was a missionary to South America," the proud papa continued.
Although a baby is always cause for celebration, the sailing was anything but smooth for this brand new mom. According to reports, family matriarch Michelle Duggar
was on hand to assist the midwife with her daughter's perilous home birth.
After being four days overdue, Jessa finally went into a labor that lasted 48 hours, resulting in massive bleeding, which required her to go to the hospital for a blood transfusion.
Though mommy and baby are now home and doing well, the complicated delivery proved to be a close call. Weighing in at just an ounce shy of a whopping 10 lbs., it's a miracle that Spurgeon was born without help from a surgeon!
