Granger Smith and his wife Amber are opening up about the tragic loss of their son River, 3. Earlier this month, the little boy died after a drowning accident at the couple’s home. Now, the duo are sharing moments from their son’s life and their grief.

The country singer explained that he had been outside with his daughter London, 7, while River and son Lincoln, 5, had a water gun fight. He said that in that instant he thought to himself, “Soak up this moment because it’s not going to last.”

His thoughts were unfortunately prescient, because within the next “30 seconds to 3 minutes,” he and Amber were doing CPR on their son.

Granger said, “God gave River to us for three years and that was his mission.”

“I don’t think God takes anyone too soon. I believe he was put on this earth for that exact amount of time,” he explained, realizing that River was with them “just over a thousand days.”

“What if you were given a gift to live 1000 days?” he asked. “If you could live those days barefoot, red hair flying back on your tractor full speed ahead, if you could do that with your family around you, with no real care in the world — that’s a good way to live.”

“He lived a good 1000 days,” Granger said, holding back tears. “That’s a huge example for me and how we’re going to look at every single day.”

Granger said, “Don’t feel sorry for us. We feel very blessed. We had an incredible boy for three years and we feel good about that. We are going to live our best life.” He also plans to go back on tour soon.

Instagram, writing in part, “If you believe in our God like we do, we know now that Riv was sent to this Earth so we could experience his joy, laughter and love for 3 years. And then Jesus came and took his hand before he went under and took him home.”
