Anderson Cooper announced on June 17 that his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, has passed away at the age of 95.

“She lived her entire life in the public eye,” Anderson, 52, said of his mother. She was born into the famous Vanderbilt family in 1924.

Gloria worked as an artist and designer. She was perhaps best known for the skinny jeans she designed in the 1970s. She even modeled them in TV ads.

She had four marriages. First she was married to Pat Dicicco for four years. She had two sons with second husband Leopold Stokowski: Leopold and Christopher.

Then she married director Sidney Lumet.

Her fourth marriage was to writer Wyatt Cooper and they had two more sons: Anderson and Carter.

Wyatt died in 1978 and Carter died by suicide in 1988. He jumped from an apartment balcony while talking to his mother.

“Gloria Vanderbilt was an extraordinary woman, who loved life, and lived it on her own terms,” Anderson said in a statement. “She was a painter, a writer and designer but also a remarkable mother, wife, and friend.”

He continued, “She was 95 years old, but ask anyone close to her, and they’d tell you: She was the youngest person they knew – the coolest and most modern.”

Anderson also revealed that she had been recently diagnosed with stomach cancer.
