Miley Cyrus Shares Insight Into Relationship With Dad Billy Ray: ‘Timing Is Everything’
Miley Cyrus has officially mended her relationship with her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus.
In an interview published Saturday, May 31, for the New York Times, the superstar, 32, said she is no longer estranged from the country singer, 63.
“I think timing is everything. As I’ve gotten older, I’m respecting my parents as individuals instead of as parents — because my mom’s really loved my dad for her whole life, and I think being married to someone in the music industry and not being a part of it is obviously really hard,” she told the publication. “And so I think I took on some of my mom’s hurt as my own because it hurt her more than it hurt me as an adult, and so I owned a lot of her pain.”

The “Achy Breaky Heart” singer and Tish Cyrus divorced in 2022 after almost 30 years of marriage. The “Flowers” hitmaker explained that witnessing her parents find joy with other partners has helped her heal.
“But now that my mom is so in love with my stepdad, who I completely adore, and now that my dad, I see him finding happiness, too — I can love them both as individuals instead of as a parental pairing,” she told the outlet. “I’m being an adult about it.”
Tish, 58, tied the knot with Australian actor Dominic Purcell in 2023. Meanwhile, Billy Ray wed singer Firerose in 2023 but filed for divorce in 2024. He is now dating actress Elizabeth Hurley. Miley added that with age comes wisdom in dealing with divorce.
“At first it’s hard, because the little kid in you reacts before the adult in you can go, ‘Yes, that’s your dad, but that’s just another person that deserves to be in his bliss and to be happy.’ My child self has caught up,” she remarked.
In May, Miley took to her Instagram Story to set the record straight that she and her mom were not feuding — Tish had just accidentally unfollowed her on Instagram. She also opened up about her relationship with Billy Ray.
“My dad and I have had our challenges over the years,” Miley admitted. “Now, in my thirties, family is my priority above all else. I’m at peace knowing bridges have been built and time has done a lot of healing.”
As for Billy Ray, he made a candid Mother’s Day post on Instagram later that month where he credited his daughter for bringing the family together.
“I’m so proud of Miley and her guts and her courage… her wisdom and strength to bring it when our family needed it most,” he wrote in part. “We are so close to a full healing.”
