Katie Thurston Shares Major Update on Stage 4 Breast Cancer Battle

Katie Thurston is facing her cancer battle head-on and sharing a major update with her followers.

After initially preparing for chemotherapy, the former Bachelorette star revealed that her breast cancer diagnosis has taken a new turn.

In an Instagram video posted on Thursday, April 10, Thurston, 34, explained that her cancer is confirmed to be HER2-negative. This means her cancer doesn’t involve the protein that typically fuels the growth of breast cancer cells. According to the Cleveland Clinic, this makes her case distinct from many other breast cancers.

“What this means is no chemo. Instead I’ll be on Letrozole + Kisqali + Zoladex as my first line of treatment,” her caption said. “This is a custom plan based on being [/] having HER2-negative, Luminal B, hormone-positive breast cancer. Letrozole to block estrogen, Kisqali to stop cancer cells from growing, and Zoladex to shut down my ovaries.”

However, chemo isn’t completely off the table for the reality star, who shared. “Could I need chemo in the future? Maybe.” She added, “If this treatment stops working or if the cancer grows again, it’s an option we’ll revisit.”

Fans were quick to chime in and wish Thurston well.

Others who went through similar diagnosis’ shared their thoughts. “Did this treatment for 5 years – sending you so much love as you get started!! You got this!” one fan encouraged.

Thurston was diagnosed in February, and March included a move to New York City plus getting married to her husband Jeff Arcuri. Sadly, at the very end of the month, she shared that her cancer had spread. “After days of waiting, unfortunately, I did find out today that my breast cancer has spread to the liver,” she updated fans on IG.
