Grammy Award-winning musician Jon Batiste has joined the latest episode of “Celebrity Substitute” at New York City’s PS 83, where he shared his expertise in spoken word poetry with eager young students.

“Celebrity Substitute” is a digital-first series that brings celebrities into the classroom to inspire and educate students.

Known for his soulful compositions and energetic performances, Batiste guided second-grade students in crafting their original poem, “When I’m 38,” encouraging them to explore their dreams and aspirations through the rhythm and rhyme of spoken word. The lesson culminated in a student-led performance poised to move not only the classroom audience but Batiste himself.

“Celebrity Substitute,” hosted by Julian Shapiro-Barnum of “Recess Therapy,” integrates the philosophy of creating accessible learning experiences by pairing celebrities with students in NYC public schools. The initiative also emphasizes community support, pairing each teaching experience with a mission to fulfill the school’s Amazon Wish List.
