Jennifer Lawrence is getting rave reviews as a mother battling postpartum depression-turned-psychosis in Die, My Love, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. The subject is something the 34-year-old can relate to.

“As a mother, it was really hard to separate what I would do as opposed to what she would do. And it was just heartbreaking,” the actress — who is mom to son Cy, 3, and a newborn with husband Cooke Maroney — told Variety of her character, Grace. “I had just had my firstborn, and there’s not really anything like postpartum. It’s extremely isolating.”

Motherhood, she went on, has altered how she views the world. “It changes your whole life. It’s brutal and incredible.” It’s also made her more in touch with her feelings, she explained, saying it’s been a boon for her work: “I highly recommend having kids if you want to be an actor.”
