Chad Lowe says he saw a “look of terror and horror” on his then-wife Hilary Swank‘s face, the moment she realized she hadn’t thanked him in her Oscars acceptance speech.
During a recent episode of the the Still Here Hollywoodpodcast, Lowe, 57, looked back to the 2000 ceremony when Swank, 51, won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Boys Don’t Cry.
Show host Steve Kmetko recalled that Swank forgot to thank her then-husband on stage and asked Lowe: “What was the car ride home like?”
According to People, Lowe replied: “I can take you to that moment, and what people didn’t see is that as soon as somebody gets up there, they start flashing a countdown of like, 30 seconds.
“The look of terror and horror on her face as they were basically ushering her off, because she recognized that she didn’t… I felt so bad for her. I didn’t even really think about it from my perspective. I just felt so terrible for her.”

Lowe added: “The first thing I said to her — she didn’t need to thank me,” Lowe added. “I mean, she’d thanked me enough. Yes, there’s an expectation publicly that you’ll do that, but I didn’t feel unappreciated. I didn’t feel, you know, taken for granted or forgotten at all. I just felt for her.”
Acclaimed actress Swank would go on to win the Best Actress Oscar a second time in 2005, for her role as a boxer in Million Dollar Baby alongside Clint Eastwood. Swank and Lowe were married for a decade from 1997 to 2007 but have both now moved on.
Swank is married to Philip Schneider and the pair welcomed twins, Ohm and Aya in 2023. Actor and director Lowe is married to wife Kim Painter and they share three daughters.
