The actress, who has been with the La La Land star since the pair met while filming The Place Beyond the Pines in 2011, spotted an AI-generated image online that appeared to show Gosling, 45, hanging out with Johnny Depp at San Diego Comic-Con.
The image, posted by the Instagram account Opavisions, showed Gosling and Depp, 63, apparently walking in San Diego alongside a character called Slopaxo, as well as signing autographs.
The account, which appears to specialize in AI-generated celebrity encounters, presented the scene as one of Comic-Con’s supposed highlights. However, in the comments 52-year-old Mendes called out the creators.
“FAKE. Please let People know when you’re putting out AI,” the Other Guys star wrote.
Seemingly busted, Opavisions acknowledged the mistake, apologizing to the actress and promising to be clearer about its AI-generated content in future.

“DISCLAIMER: THIS WAS AI,” they wrote in their reply. “Thank you for saying something. You’re right, and I’ll be more clear going forward. BTW, Ryan’s work has genuinely inspired me for years — The Nice Guys (real SLOPAXO vibes) and Beyond the Pines are some of my favorite films ever and a huge influence on the kind of entertaining stories I love creating one day.”
There is one part of the viral story that is true: Both Gosling and Depp were at San Diego Comic-Con promoting upcoming projects.
